Burnished concrete flooring

Concrete burnishers, also called power trowels, are mechanical and operate similarly to a concrete grinder. These machines aren’t powerful enough to grind down a concrete surface — instead, they are used to heat, melt, and polish a coating which is applied to a surface. The coating melts into the small pores in the concrete surface.

We always recommend sealing burnished concrete. A sealant will protect your floor from stains, and will help it remain durable for longer.

A burnished concrete finish refers to the finish applied to a concrete slab or pre-existing concrete floor. It provides a hard-wearing, durable finish with a surface lustre, at an affordable price.

Installing burnished concrete flooring can be a finicky process, and will require a professional touch to get right. Here are some risks and considerations you should be aware of before proceeding:

• Your existing concrete slab must be perfectly poured for burnishing to work.
• Existing cement slabs often have darker centres and lighter edges.
• Burnishing concrete does not remove stains, so existing marks will still be visible beneath the coat.
• Only use an experience concrete installed to ensure that you get the best possible outcome.

You can add literally any kind of colour or finish you can think of to your new burnished concrete floor. The versatility of the process allows you to be very creative, giving you the opportunity to create the exact colour and polish level you desire.

Depending on the level of foot traffic your floor receives, we would recommend renewing the burnishing process every 5 to 10 years or so. This renewal will be less expensive than the initial process.

Like all kinds of concrete floor, you can keep your burnished concrete floor looking great all year round by following a few key maintenance points:

• Mop up and spills and stains as soon as they happen
• Keep your floor free from dirt, dust and grime
• Burnishing concrete does not remove stains, so existing marks will still be visible beneath the coat.
• Use a micro fibre mop to clean the floor once a week
