Benefits of Hydronic Underfloor Heating

Hydronic slab heating is the most energy-efficient and cost-effective way to warm your home. But, of course, it’s just as valuable in commercial venues as well.

The secret to its efficiency lies in concrete’s effectiveness at absorbing and retaining heat. Once the hydronic system imparts heat into the concrete, the concrete evenly and steadily radiates that heat across the room. Moreover, it can continue radiating that comforting heat even after the hydronic system is turned off.

Hydronic underfloor heating is perfect for your home’s bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas, rumpus rooms and kitchens. But if you have a commercial venue, such as an office, cafe, library or showroom, we guarantee your staff and customers will be thoroughly impressed and extremely grateful.

Heated Flooring Systems

Hydronic slab heating

When installing hydronic slab floor heating, the underfloor pipework is embedded directly into wet concrete. This is usually done when the floors are first laid during the home’s construction or during a major remodel. The system can be zoned to different rooms, allowing you better control over your household expenses.

Hydronic screed heating

To install a screed hydronic heating system, first, an insulated pipe positioning board is laid over an existing concrete slab. Next, the snaking underfloor pipe is set into this. A thin layer of concrete is then poured over the pipes, called the screed. This system can also be easily zoned if required.

Hydronic Heating Systems With Area Zoning

Policrete’s experts can lay concrete over single and multiple zone hydronic systems, depending on your preference.

In single-zone hydronic systems, one major circuit covers one single area, such as a living room or a restaurant’s seating space. The circuit’s heat is expected to radiate throughout the rest of the building or space. Naturally, its efficacy lessens the farther away you get from the circuit.

Single-zone hydronic systems are ideal if you expect people to congregate in one area, such as restaurants, stores and other commercial establishments.

Multizone hydronic systems have several distinct heating circuits. Each can be turned off or on or given its own thermostat for controlled heating. These systems are more complex but better suited for larger, segregated areas or homes with several rooms and occupants with individual heating preferences.

Hydronic Heating Is a Sanitary and Hygienic Solution

Most other heating systems work by warming recycled air. If these systems don’t filter the air, or if their filters get clogged up over time, then they will pump bacteria and allergen-filled air throughout your home or business. This can be quite dangerous for sensitive and immunocompromised people.

Hydronic water pipe circuits are encased in concrete and underground, so there is absolutely no chance of carrying allergens into populated spaces. The concrete also makes the pipes virtually puncture-proof, so there’s an extremely small chance of a leak. Your staff, customers and loved ones will be perfectly safe.

Why is concrete ideal for hydronic heating?

As a high thermal mass material, concrete absorbs and retains heat. Therefore, it’s perfect for hydronic heating. As the hot water flows through the heating system, the heat is easily transferred to the concrete and releases heat across the entire floor area. This gives you a lovely warm floor that radiates heat through your entire home or workspace.

How does a hydronic heating slab work?

Hydronic floor heating is the process of installing water pipes right below the surface of your floor. A hydronic heating boiler sends hot water through a coiled floor heating pipe, which then radiates warmth through your house.

Hydronic heating transforms your concrete slab into a radiant heater, slowly warming your entire property. Pipes are laid inside the concrete slab so hot water can run through them. As concrete absorbs and retains heat, warmth spreads across the entire concrete slab and into your property. Concrete’s ability to retain heat makes it incredibly energy-efficient and cost-effective. This makes hydronic slab heating ideal for large living or working areas, such as office spaces, homes, and stores.

What steps are taken to install hydronic heating with infill slabs?

We have a team of concrete flooring specialists, a fleet of custom-fitted trucks, the best equipment, and access to the highest quality materials. As such, we provide full-service concrete flooring—from pouring to polishing.

We offer a complete four-step process:

  1. Pour the foundational slab.
  2. Lay the hydronic heating system in place.
  3. Finish pouring the infill slab over the top.
  4. Polish the top layer of decorative concrete.

Do you offer infill slabs on their own?

Absolutely. Many commercial properties don’t require hydronic heating, such as retail outlets, commercial kitchens, or warehouses. We offer a complete service, from pouring the infill slab to polishing it or sealing it with the coating of your choice.
